Our approach

How we listen

Footprints combines the breadth of large-scale surveys with the depth of qualitative inquiry. Numbers tell us what is happening; conversations help us understand why.

International Survey

Every research phase begins with a biennial online survey of young people aged 18 to 29, conducted simultaneously in eight or more countries across four continents. A common core questionnaire — adapted to each cultural context — allows for meaningful cross-national comparison while respecting local particularities. Sample sizes are designed to ensure statistical representativeness in each country.

Focus Groups

Alongside the survey, we conduct a series of in-depth focus groups with young people in each partner country. These guided conversations allow us to go beneath the surface of the data, exploring the meanings, tensions, and emerging trends that numbers alone cannot capture. Participants speak candidly about their lives, doubts, aspirations, and experiences of faith, work, and love.

Expert Workshops

Each research phase concludes with one or more expert workshops, bringing together scholars, educators, and practitioners from different fields and traditions. These sessions serve to interpret the findings collaboratively, refine the tools for the next phase, and translate insights into practical implications for education, pastoral ministry, and public policy.
